HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY STYLE FOR YOUR WEDDING

Timeless, fun, relaxed, natural..

I’m guessing you’ve read these words a lot as you’ve scrolled through the websites of potential wedding photographers.

But what do they actually mean?

And how do you actually describe the wedding photography style that you’re looking for?

Most photographers will have their own mix of styles and interpret each one differently, so if you’re searching for your perfect wedding photographer, it’s important to know what you do and don’t like AND be able to communicate it.

Ever wondered what makes each style different and how to make sure a style matches your personality? Then this post is for you!

First up, let’s highlight some of the popular wedding photography styles and how they’re commonly described -

TRADITIONAL

As you’d imagine, this one’s a classic style that focuses on those timeless and formal shots of both the couple and their families. Think posed family portraits and traditional wedding moments - likely the style of photos you’ve seen in your parent’s wedding album.

DOCUMENTARY

One of the most common styles out there, this style is all about candid storytelling and capturing those spontaneous interactions and emotions throughout the day. Zero posing - just documenting the day as it unfolds, moment to moment.

ARTISTIC

This is where creative expression gets to really shine. One-of-a-kind images that leave you saying “wow”, as your photographer experiments with new angles, techniques and editing to elevate your shots and bring you right back to that wedding high every time you pick up a photo.

LOCATION/LANDSCAPES

When you’re investing your hard earned dollars into a picturesque venue or wedding location, this one is a must. This style has a focus on emphasising the beauty of the landmarks or landscapes as the backdrop for the couple, and knows exactly how to highlight the uniqueness of both at the same time.

FASHION/EDITORIAL

This one needs less of an introduction. With glamour, high-fashion and magazine-worthy images at the centre, be ready for creative posing, dramatic lighting and of course, all the outfit changes.

FINE ART

Bringing together artistic elements with that dash of elegance and lighting techniques, the fine art style is definitely one to consider if you want to highlight the aesthetics of your surroundings and create gallery-worthy images.

RUSTIC

This one is for the nature lovers. Embracing the outdoors and the organic textures of the forest, different woods, barns and open fields - the connection and the story between a couple and their environment really shines through this style.

So now that you know what each style entails, how do you nail that perfect blend for you in a way that truly reflects who you are as a couple and the way you want to look back on your big day? Let’s break down some of the important questions to ask yourself before you start your search -

How do you and your partner want to feel when having your photo taken?

Up for some fun and adventure on your wedding day? Down to try some new things and get lost in the moment? Then an artistic style combination is definitely one to consider.

Or do you prefer to stay comfortable, and enjoy your day without feeling over posed? Perfect for the camera shy couple, a documentary style is always a winner here.

What parts of your love story do you want to highlight?

We all have different values so this is a great time to check in on yours as a couple. What do you want to look back on and remember about your relationship?

Is it how much fun you’ve always had together? Those tender, romantic moments? Or perhaps it’s your shared love for your family pet? Whatever it is, choose the style that will let that shine.

What do you love most about the wedding photos you’ve seen?

Take a look at your Pinterest boards or saved photos on Instagram. What do you find yourself saving or sending to your partner? What do you find yourself gravitating towards? Is it the emotion they evoke or is it that they look like a work of art?

This will give you a clear idea on not just the style you want to recreate but what you’re most likely to love about your photos and why you’ll want to treasure them even more.

Where are you getting married and what’s your wedding theme?

Think about what style will complement your overall wedding theme and the backdrop of your photos. Getting married in a ballroom with a black tie theme? Or are you saying your vows on a property with stunning views? Choose a style that highlights your theme and it will be a match made in heaven.
